A Futsal Football Ground was inaugurated today at Saipung village in East Jaintia Hills under the District Mineral Foundation (DMF) Fund.
Local MLA Santa Mary Shylla, Deputy Commissioner& Chairman, DMF Trust Shivansh Awasthi, MDC Lalwilliam Thiaite, Public Prosecutor S. Pdang, Saipung Block Development Officer (BDO), Dr. R. Pyrtuh, traditional heads and people of the area were present on the ocassion.
In her address, Shylla stressed on the need for constructing more facilities for sports persons of the district in order to inculcate a sporting culture among the youths and the community as a whole and to encourage them to enthusiastically engage in sports activities in the interest of their health and well-being.
Shylla announced that the project for improvement of the road connecting Sutnga and Saipung is already on the pipeline and expressed hope that work on this stretch commences in the next four to five months.
The Deputy Commissioner thanked the people of Saipung for providing land for the construction of the playground and appealed to students and youth of Saipung area to think of sports not just as an extracurricular activity but also a career option even as he emphasized that sports is important for physical health, sound mind and overall well-being of individuals.
Awasthi also informed the gathering of schemes available in the sports sector including the Chief Minister’s Youth Development Scheme, Cash Award Scheme, Scholarship Scheme for athletes, etc even as he stressed on the need to identify sporting talents at a young age so that they become more proficient and skilled with age.
