Following complaints and concerns raised by the public about the quality of drinking water, the Federation of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) today collected water samples from 51 different localities across Shilllong.
Members of the pressure group brought in water samples from around the city to the State Food Testing Laboratory at Pasteur Hill.
Speaking to reporters, FKJGP president Dundee Khongsit said that this was done just to bring clarity if the water provided to the public is safe for consumption or not.
“We’ve given two samples from each locality, one is to check the bacteria levels and the other is to check the amount of heavy metals,” Khongsit said. “The results will be out after 15 days. Once we receive the results, if it’s positive then well and good. If the results are negative, we will urge the government to fix the issue of supply.”
The FKJGP’s motive is not to blame the government but only to ensure that the people get safe and clean drinking water supplied to them. “Our only concern is that the authorities, like the Municipal Board and PHE (Public Health Engineering) Department should work together for the safety of the citizens,” Khongsit added.
