Fissures in the United Democratic Party (UDP) at Umsning have surfaced as scores of its members led by circle president Donkupar Sumer today decided to resign enmasse against being sidelined by party leaders.
The UDP has unofficially decided to deny ticket to Sumer. Sources in the party said that Sunshine Makri would be given a ticket to contest from Umsning.
Speaking at the meeting held at the Umsning auditorium, Sumer said the decision to resign was against denial of party ticket to contest in the upcoming Assembly elections. He said the state and district leaders of the party favour a new comer without consulting party leaders and supporters from the circle.
“I was made a scapegoat in favour of Kyrmen Shylla, who will contest from Khliehriat constituency. They chose to give the party ticket to Sunshine Makri as his father is contesting from Khliehriat on NPP ticket,” Sumer said.
Party leaders which include President of Women’s wing, R. Kharluki, Secretary of women’s wing, Bashisha Lyngdoh, Umsning UDP Adviser, Jopstar Shabong, Shaphrang Nongrum and Barister Lyngdoh, President of UDP Youth wing also spoke at the meeting and alleged that the party leaders have been practising “double standards.”
