Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that governments of both the Assam and Meghalaya will work hand in hand with the help of the Indian Army to transform Umiam into a world class venue for aquatic sports.
Addressing the closing ceremony of the three-day Rising Sun Water Fest 2022 in Umiam today, Sarma said with Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma both states can create a favourable environment where water sports like rowing and sailing can flourish and tourism gets a huge boost.
The three-day water sports and cultural extravaganza was the first of its kind in the Northeast aimed at encouraging the sports-loving youth of the region to take up water sports like rowing and sailing.
Held under the under the aegis of the Indian Army’s Kolkata-based Headquarters Eastern Command, the event was conducted under the banners of the Khelo India campaign to promote watersports in the region.
Twenty-two clubs from across the country took part in the event. The rowing trophy was won by the team from Director General of the Assam Rifles (DGAR), which secured one gold and one silver. The sailing trophy was clinched by the Yatching Club of Hyderabad, which secured three gold, two silver, and one bronze medal.
Lieutenant General R.P. Kalita, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Command, Air Marshal S.P. Dharkar, AOC-in-C, Eastern Air Command, and many other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
