Chief Medical Officer (SG) of the Assam Rifles, Commandant (Dr) Mary Hrannghul passed away yesterday due to septic shock while undergoing treatment for Cancer at the Guwahati Hayat Hospital,
Hranngul hails from Madanriting locality here. She was commissioned as an officer in the Assam Rifles on January 18, 2003 and was the first woman medical officer of Assam Rifles, to be promoted to the rank of Colonel in April 2016.
She was also the only medical officer to have been awarded a Police Gallantry Medal by the President on Republic Day in 2012 for her active role in counter insurgency operations in Manipur. She had served in Assam, Mizoram, and Nagaland in various appointments
Hranngul was an alumna of St Mary’s College, Shillong and completed MBBS from the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.
Her funeral service was held today in the community hall of the Evangelical Free Church of India (EFCI), Demthring, where she was accorded full military honours after the community paid their tributes. Her mortal remains was laid to rest in the EFCI Cemetery near Longrange.
Her parents were late Rev. C Hranngul and Kimi Hranngul. She is survived by two siblings, Dr Leni, Medical Officer in Bethany Hospital Shillong and Varmawii, an education entrepreneur in Kolosib, Mizoram.
