The first planned skywalk, meant to aid in decongesting Shillong’s clogged roads, will be completed this year, Chief Minister designate Conrad K Sangma said today.
The first one will run from Barik point to Police Bazar.
He also said that there are also going to be elevated footpaths with innovative and modern designs that will add to the beauty of the city and not just be utilitarian.
Another thing that will help reduce the problem of traffic in the city will be moving the Secretariat to a new location.
“We have already identified the location in the past and the process of doing the master plan has already started. We expect that within a few months, we should be able to come to a final design and all those aspects and within five years we will see a major decongestion of Shillong in terms of the administrative wing that will be right next to the IT park in the Mawpat area,” Sangma assured.
Still the dream of flyovers persists, though.
“These aspects are being examined and seen but it’s not easy as Shillong is very congested and most of the time you don’t get the space to put up pillars to get elevated roads. These challenges are there, but let’s hope that we are able to take forward the plans we had earlier to create the parking lots in the Smart City Plan,” Sangma added.
