Social activist Agnes Kharshiing has filed a FIR with the Meghalaya Director General of Police to take action against illegal coal operations in the state.
“Hundreds” of coal trucks have been transporting illegally mined coal from East Jaiñtia Hills in the last two days, Kharshiing said in the FIR today.
According to her, instead of buying their coal from three designated places, these trucks are filling up on coal purchased from the roadside and from rat-hole mines that are operating in violation of Supreme Court and National Green Tribunal orders.
Overloaded trucks are plying without valid challans or by reusing challans, she further claimed.
Kharshiing urged the DGP to alert the authorities in East Jaiñtia Hills, West Jaiñtia Hills, East Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi and that of his counterpart in the Assam police in order to investigate “who is the mastermind and who in the government is allowing this Supreme Court violation and cheating the government of its revenue.”
