Shillong, Sep 12: A one-day training programme on ‘Feed and Fodder Requirement in Dairy Farming’ was conducted at KVK campus, Tura on Friday.
The programme was organised by the Assistant Director (Dairy), Tura, Senior Dairy Officer, Tura and West Garo Hills District Co-operative Milk Union Ltd in collaboration with ICAR-KVK, Tura.
Fifteen progressive dairy farmers from Chibonggre, Chandigre, Asimgre, Durakantagre villages of West Garo Hills and Sulhilgre, Bandagre villages of East Garo Hills participated.
Officials said per capita availability of milk in Meghalaya is only 79 gm/day (2024-25), far below world average of 394 gm/day and ICMR recommendation of 300 gm/day, and high feed cost is a major constraint in Garo Hills.
Participants were taught cultivation methods of perennial fodder grasses like Para, Guinea, Hybrid Napier, Super Napier, Red Napier, Congo Signal, Stylosanthes and trees like Subabul and Bauhinia with practical demonstration at KVK’s fodder cafeteria, besides hands-on training on Azolla cultivation.
