Amid the controversy over the removal of three officers of the State Lokayukta, Meghalaya Trinamool Congress leader Dr. Mukul Sangma today questioned the intention behind it.
Questioning if there was any malafide intention behind the removal of the Lokayukta officers, Dr. Sangma asked if there was any reason which necessitated the government to change officers, since the Lokayukta is doing its job.
“A number of issues of corruption have already been taken up by the Lokayukta. So you can understand the magnitude of responsibilities concerned. What’s the purpose of Lokayukta? The whole State wanted at least something which is acting as deterrence and therefore allow it to function to its full potentiality,” the former chief minister stated.
He added that fear for law is crucial and enactment of law is precisely to ensure that there is ultimate end result of enabling people to self regulate.
“When there is a fear for law people will self regulate, when there is fear for law everybody including policy makers will self regulate. So the sole idea of Lokayukta and other laws which have been enacted do have the same objective,” Sangma said.
