Quotas in state government jobs should be reserved, if at all, for the poor and underprivileged and not be based solely on tribal status, former civil servant Toki Blah has told Highland Post.
“If there’s to be reservation, let’s forget the reservation on the definition of tribes and let there be reservation for the poor people,” Blah said recently.
He questioned whether Meghalaya, even after more than 50 years of statehood, can really justify continuing with reservation, which he feels stifles the spirit of competitiveness.
“What we need is improvement in the economy and to not remain stagnant on reservation,” Blah said, adding that if in five decades Meghalayans cannot rise then they will not even in 1,000 years.
