As part of the election process ahead of the February 27 Assembly polls, various election committees have been notified at the district level in Meghalaya.
These are to ensure compliance with the instructions of the Election Commission of India to guarantee free and fair elections.
In South West Khasi Hills, the District Election Officer, T Lyngwa, informed that the Expenditure Monitoring Committee, Election Expenditure Monitoring Control Room and Complaint Monitoring Centre 24×7 have been constituted. The public can contact 9485153272 for any election expenditure matters.
In Tura, the control room is in the District Disaster Management Authority office. The official in charge is Emanuel M Sangma and the public can call 9233473074 (mobile) or 03651222000 (landline). The district administration of West Garo Hills has also urged all public servants involved in the election process to give their best in the performance of their duties. “This is the largest festival of democracy in the world,” Deputy Commissioner Swapnil Tembe said in a release. “Let us work as a team for the successful conduct of elections and also to ensure free and fair elections.”
In Ri-Bhoi, the District Election Officer, Arpit Upadhaya today announced that the Model Code of Conduct has been enforced strictly in the district.
“On enforcing the MCC, all sector officers, magistrates and Returning Officers have taken necessary steps to ensure that the Model Code of Conduct is in force,” he said, adding that extra caution has also been taken so that no undue influence is used on the people.
He also informed that this year there is some change for seniors and the disabled as they have been categorised as absentee voters, which means that they can exercise their vote through a special postal ballot if they do not or cannot visit the polling station in person.
As part of enhanced police operations ahead of the elections, the authorities recently seized heroin worth Rs 1 crore and gold of 570g worth Rs 30 lakh.
Today the district administration held a meeting with all representatives of political parties of Ri-Bhoi to ensure that the MCC is enforced in the district.
