Shillong, May 22: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced the schedule for biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha to fill 24 seats falling vacant in June-July 2026 across 10 states, including the lone seat from Meghalaya currently represented by Wanweiroy Kharlukhi of the National People’s Party (NPP).
As per the schedule released by the ECI, the notification for the elections will be issued on June 1, while the last date for filing nominations will be June 8. Scrutiny of nominations will take place the following day, with the last date for withdrawal of candidature fixed for June 11.
Polling, if required, will be held on June 18 from 9am to 4pm, followed by counting of votes at 5pm the same day. The entire election process is scheduled to be completed by June 20.
The ECI stated that only integrated violet sketch pens of prescribed specification provided by the Returning Officer shall be used for marking preferences on ballot papers. Measures will also be put in place for close monitoring of the election process to ensure free and fair polls.
Although no party has yet put forward a candidate for the election, the NPP’s choice is expected to sail through as the party has an outright majority in the Meghalaya Assembly even before the strength of its allies is taken into consideration.
