Residents of East Jaintia Hills have decided to withdraw the indefinite blockade along National Highway 6 as the National Highway Authority of India gets to work filling up potholes.
Joint Action Committee chairman, Lasting Pala made the announcement this evening, four days after locals blocked the highway since June 19 in protest against the pathetic conditions of the highway.
Pala said that potholes along the stretch from Tongseng to Ratacherra have been filled and demanded that the NHAI completes the repair works within a week or they will intensify their protest.
Villagers of Tongseng, Kuliang, Pyrtakuna, Umkiang, Donaskur, Donaumbluh, Ratacherra, Malidor villages took part in large numbers to disallow any movement along the national highway that connects Assam, Mizoram and Tripura.
The crucial lifeline has suffered extensive damage due to years of neglect. The rainy seasons have exacerbated the situation, reducing large sections to muddy, impassable stretches.
