The Ri Bhoi Students Union (RBSU) has expressed concern over the slow pace of construction work of the Dwar Ksuid bridge along the Shillong by-pass terming the assurance made by the government to complete it by January as “false promises.”
The union reminded that Transport Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar during his visit at the repair site on December 15, 2020 he had assured that the construction will be completed by January 15.
RBSU working president Amberlight Masharing stated that till date the construction which is carried on by the BRO is underway and yet to see the light of the new temporary steel bridge.
“Due to tardy pace of work the people are suffering because they are always caught in traffic jam. This is because of the failure on the part of the government to fulfill promises it had made,” Marsharing said.
Asking the State government to act responsibly and take up the issue with the BRO since the bridge is a major one as it connects other states as well.
It may be mentioned that heavy loaded trucks and other vehicles carrying load of more than 20 to 30 metric tons are restricted to ply through the Dwar Ksuid Brigde of Shillong Bypass and the movement of heavy loaded vehicles has been diverted to Shillong through the Umiam Bridge.
Umiam Dam is close to 60 years old and fears for its safety have been raised periodically over the last few years.
