A suspected drug peddler, identified by police as Vicky Shabong, reportedly escaped detention while undergoing a medical checkup at Shillong Civil Hospital.
Police had arrested Shabong (27) and two others in Ri-Bhoi on Saturday while they were travelling from Guwahati to Shillong with a consignment of heroin.
Shabong and Aman Diengdoh had been travelling to Shillong on a two-wheeler (ML 05 W 4762) but police had been informed of this and the duo were caught at a checkpoint set up at Byrnihat at around 6:30pm.
On further questioning, it was revealed that the two men were being accompanied by another person who was traveling on a motorbike behind them, so police continued with their checkpoint. However, when they tried to intercept a motorbike (ML 05 R 5706), the rider fled but was later nabbed by Nongpoh police. He was identified as Ribok Lyngdoh.
