      By Subhas Bhattacharjee

Dragon fruit has emerged as one of the fastest-growing high-value horticultural crops in India. Owing to its attractive appearance, excellent nutritional properties, drought tolerance and increasing domestic demand, it offers significant opportunities for crop diversification and enhancing farmers’ income. The North Eastern Region (NER), with its favourable agro-climatic conditions, abundant rainfall, well-drained soils and increasing focus on horticultural diversification, has immense potential to become a major production hub for dragon fruit. Recent economic studies in Assam have shown that dragon fruit cultivation is financially attractive, with strong long-term returns despite relatively high initial establishment costs.

Potential Dragon Fruit Cultivation in Assam and the North East

North Eastern Region possesses several natural and institutional advantages like suitable subtropical climate with adequate sunshine, well-drained sandy loam to loamy soils, availability of degraded uplands suitable for perennial horticulture, increasing adoption of drip irrigation under government schemes. Further, there is a strong support through MIDH (Mission on Integrated Development of Horticulture), MOVCDNER (Mission Organic Value Chain Development), PMKSY and other horticulture programs besides, availability of Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) for its aggregation and marketing.

      Potential districts include:

Assam: Kamrup, Sonitpur, Nagaon, Golaghat, Jorhat, Darrang, Udalguri, Karbi Anglong, Cachar and Dhubri.

Arunachal Pradesh: East Siang, Lower Dibang Valley and Papum Pare.

Tripura: Sepahijala, Gomati and South Tripura.

Meghalaya: Ri-Bhoi, East Khasi Hills and West Garo Hills.

Mizoram, Nagaland and Manipur: Suitable upland areas with good drainage

Dragon fruit starts yielding within 12–18 months and remains productive for nearly 20 years, making it an attractive long-term investment.

      Economic Advantages

Dragon Fruit has high market demand in metropolitan cities; it gives premium retail prices compared to conventional fruits. It has lower water requirements than many fruit crops and it has tolerance to drought conditions. Comparatively less incidence of major pests and diseases. Moreover, it goes for multiple harvests every year and has a long productive life. It is suitable for integrated farming and agro-tourism.

Research conducted by Assam Agricultural University indicates that dragon fruit cultivation is economically viable with a high benefit-cost ratio and strong internal rate of return, although farmers face challenges such as high establishment costs, labour requirements and limited consumer awareness.

      Opportunities for Value Addition

Fresh fruit marketing alone cannot maximize farmers’ income. Processing and value addition can substantially increase profitability while reducing post-harvest losses.

Potential products include, Fresh-cut dragon fruit, Juice, Ready-to-serve beverages, Nectar, Wine, Vinegar, Ice cream, Yogurt, Smoothies, Candy, Fruit leather, Dried dragon fruit slices, Freeze-dried fruit, Dragon fruit powder, Bakery ingredients, Health drinks and even Nutraceutical products.

Peel is rich in natural antioxidants and pigments, and can be processed into Natural food color, functional beverages, herbal tea, cosmetic ingredients, nutraceutical extracts, animal feed and even organic compost.

ICAR research highlights the importance of post-harvest handling, grading, cold-chain development and utilization of peel and by-products to improve profitability and reduce waste.

      Processing Opportunities

Processing infrastructure may be developed at three levels:

      –          Village Level: Washing, Sorting, Grading, Packaging, Primary processing like Solar drying etc

      –          District Level: Juice extraction, Jam and jelly production, Freeze drying, Pulp processing and Vacuum packaging

      –          Industrial Level: Beverage manufacturing, Nutraceutical production, Cosmetic extraction, Export-quality packaging & RTE products

Food processing parks and common facility centers under PMFME and MIDH can support entrepreneurs and FPOs in establishing such units.

      Marketing Opportunities

Demand for dragon fruit is growing rapidly in cities like Guwahati, Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai.

Potential marketing channels include: Farmer Producer Organizations, Retail supermarket chains, Departmental Stores, E-commerce platforms, Hotels and restaurants, Institutional buyers, Fruit wholesalers, Airport retail outlets, Organic food stores, Health food chains.

Directorate of Horticulture & Food Processing, Govt. of Assam emphasizes improved grading, packaging, market intelligence, processing and efficient marketing channels to reduce losses & increase farmers’ returns.

      Export Potential

Dragon fruit has increasing export demand too in countries like, UAE, Singapore, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Middle East & Europe.

With proper certification, residue-free production, cold-chain logistics and APEDA support, dragon fruit from Northeast India can emerge as an important export commodity.

      Challenges

Few major constraints are high initial investment for poles and drip irrigation, limited availability of quality planting material, lack of technical knowledge, inadequate post-harvest infrastructure, weak cold-chain facilities and limited processing units in the region.

Poor branding, market fluctuations & limited consumer awareness in smaller towns creates problems for the dragon fruit growers at times.

      Strategic Recommendations

In order to promote dragon fruit cultivation in Assam and Northeast, it is recommended to go for establishment of certified mother blocks and nurseries, provide financial assistance for orchard establishment, need to promote drip irrigation and fertigation, strengthen FPO-led production clusters, develop pack houses, cold rooms and ripening facilities, establish district-level processing units, promote women and youth entrepreneurship in value addition, develop a regional Northeast Dragon Fruit brand.

There is a need to facilitate APEDA supported export linkages, and organize buyer-seller meets and retail partnerships. Further, encouraging research on improved varieties and post-harvest technologies and promoting organic and residue-free cultivation for premium markets are critical for sustainability.

Dragon fruit has the potential to become a flagship high-value horticultural crop for the North East. With suitable agro-climatic conditions, growing domestic demand, increasing export opportunities and strong scope for value addition, it can significantly enhance farmers’ income, create rural employment and stimulate agro-processing industries. A coordinated approach involving government departments, research institutions, FPOs, processors, private investors and marketing agencies will be essential to build a sustainable dragon fruit value chain in the region. Investment in processing, branding, cold-chain infrastructure and export promotion will transform dragon fruit from a niche crop into a major horticultural enterprise contributing to agricultural diversification and economic growth in the North East.
