Professor Dr Barbara S Sangma of Don Bosco College, Tura brought laurels to the college and the State as she emerged the winner at the International Poetry writing competition.
Dr Sangma, the head of the English department in the college won the first prize for her poem on Covid-19 titled, ‘A Crown Anyone’.
The competition was organised by the All India Forum for English Students, Scholars & Trainers (AIFEST).
“I feel that I was able to show my take on the pandemic, and it is nice to feature on an international level, not individually, but for the tribe. It’s like sticking out our fingers and trying the chord. If we do not try, we do not know,” Dr Sangma said.
It may be mentioned that the professor is the first Garo to publish a book of poems in the English language. Titled ‘String in a lute’ was released in August, 2020.
Meanwhile, the staff of Tura Don Bosco College has congratulated the professor for her feat. “Having participated along with other contestants from 31 countries and bagging the first prize is a matter of pride and joy for the college and the Garo tribe as a whole. The Anthology of Poetry is due to come out from the same organizers”, stated Fr Bivan Rodrigues, Principal of Don Bosco College.
