The All Meghalaya Domestic Workers Union (AMDWU), which falls under the umbrella of the National Domestic Workers Movement, has urged all domestic workers in the state to register with the union for safety, protection and welfare.
Addressing reporters today, International Workers’ Day, AMDWU also demanded a separate welfare board for domestic workers.
Informing that more than 2,500 domestic workers (local and migrant) are registered with the union, AMDWU said that there are many who have or will move out of the state for employment and it is for their own protection to be enrolled in a union. Only recently, a Meghalaya domestic helper was rescued from Nagpur in Maharashtra after facing physical abuse by her employer.
Domestic workers in the union are given awareness on labour rights, social protection, social security and training in different skills, like cooking, housekeeping, hospitality management, child and elderly care etc.
