Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Derek O’Brien campaigned for the party’s candidate for the Jowai seat, Awhai Andrew Shullai today.
The Rajya Sabha MP promised that the TMC will deliver on all its promises within 100 days of coming to power following the February 27 election.
“After our Jowai candidate Andrew Shullai becomes MLA and Meghalaya TMC forms the government in the state, we will deliver on our promises within 100 days,” O’Brien said at a press conference in Jowai.
He also dismissed “negative propaganda” surrounding the party’s women’s empowerment and youth employment schemes, saying that there have been nearly 8 lakh registrations for both. “When some people get elected as MLAs, they become salespersons. However, through these schemes, we are giving back what belongs to the people.”
O’Brien and Shullai addressed a public meeting in Iawmusiang earlier in the day.
He had recently received unexpected support from leaders of rival parties, including the National People’s Party (NPP). Veteran Congress leader and former Deputy Chief Minister RC Laloo and NPP leader Brightstar Chyrmang have appealed to the people to vote for Shullai. Chyrmang is the NPP’s MDC in the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council.
