Police are hunting for two friends of the man who was decapitated and whose body was dumped near or in Umiam Lake.
The man has been identified as Omeka Myrthong of Mawlaingut village in East Khasi Hills. His head was found on Tuesday and the rest of his body yesterday.
Deputy Inspector General of Police Davis NR Marak today informed that the case was initially registered as an unnatural death at Umiam police station. The autopsy was completed yesterday.
Myrthong went missing on February 26 but a missing person complaint was registered at Lumdiengjri police station in Shillong only on March 3. The FIR filed at Umiam police station after the body was found has now been transferred to Lumdiengjri police station, which will lead the investigation.
Police at the latter came to know that Myrthong was last seen in the company of two of his friends who are believed to have been intoxicated at the time, Marak said.
These two friends are absconding as of now but police are on the lookout for them and the Deputy IGP said that facts will become clear once police get custody of the duo.
