Wanting to bring a breath of fresh air to a staid Assembly, 27-year-old Richard Nongbsap, from Umlyngka Sepngi, filed his nomination papers to run for the Mylliem seat in the upcoming February 27 state election today.
Nongbsap is a daily wage worker and makes a living by doing odd jobs, such as collecting grass to feed cows, picking up waste charcoal and other scraps.
Accompanied by his loved ones, Nongbsap said he will contest as an independent candidate and has chosen a CCTV camera as his symbol. He decided to contest the election so that he can bring in a law and find out who are the corrupt MLAs and to also find out what the source of their extra money is.
“I will not allow the MLAs to distribute money without keeping a record to avoid corruption. To also bring transparency and to ensure that the poor get the schemes that are meant for them, like those for housing for below poverty line people,” he said.
