With New Year’s Eve in the offing, the Shillong Traffic Police will launch a special drive to ensure that revellers stay within the legal limits of alcohol consumption while driving.
Yesterday, the traffic branch urged citizens not to drive under the influence of alcohol.
“If people plan to drink, they should have another driver with them. Under no circumstances should anyone exceed the legal alcohol limit of 30 milligrammes (per 100ml of blood),” the police stated.
This nationwide limit works out to 0.03 percent, which is quite restrictive compared to other countries; for example in the United Kingdom the legal limit ranges from 0.05 to 0.08 percent.
The police further warned that strict action will be taken against individuals found guilty of drunken or rash driving. “There will be heavy penalties for such offenses and we will also act against those engaging in illegal parking,” the force added.
