Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today addressed an NPP rally in the bastion of Dr Mukul Sangma’s family, Ampati, touting his government’s record and asking the people of South West Garo Hills to give their support to the NPP this time around.
The district failed to return a single NPP legislator in the 2018 election.
The Ampati seat is currently held by leader of the opposition Dr Sangma’s daughter, Miani Shira.
Conrad wants to change that and blamed the lack of NPP legislators for the lack of development in the district.
He said it was difficult for the government to initiate development initiatives as all the MLAs were from the opposition and did not work with the government for the people.
The CM said that this time the NPP is heading for an absolute majority in Meghalaya and it is imperative that South West Garo Hills unites to ensure the NPP’s victory. “It is important that MLAs collaborate with the Government. It is always best to have MLAs from the ruling side,” the NPP’s chief said.
He also said that the party is committed to providing opportunities for the youth, pledging 5 lakh jobs through entrepreneurship and other initiatives.
He recounted all the schemes introduced by his government, including PRIME, YESS, Aspire Meghalaya and others, as well as the support given to sports.
“In the next five years, if we get the mandate of the people, we will continue with our programme for leveraging the positive energy of our youth,” the CM assured.
Terming that TMC is divided, he said many of its supporters are now leaving and joining the NPP as they are convinced that there is no future with the TMC. Dr Sangma is the state’s senior figure in the TMC.
In today’s meetings, a large number of TMC supporters also joined the NPP to support the candidature of Stevie Marak, Subir Marak, Sanjay A Sangma and Ian Botham K Sangma, the NPP’s candidates in SWGH.
