Despite low attendance, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi today addressed party supporters at Malki Ground here stating that Congress understands Meghalaya’s aspirations and is committed to protect the rights of the people.
Wearing the traditional Khasi jacket, Gandhi asserted that he will ensure the Congress party fulfils all its commitments that it has made in its election campaign to make Meghalaya a Five Star State after the party comes to power.
Elaborating the Congress party’s vision for a stronger and progressive Meghalaya, Gandhi also insisted that there is substantial anger against the NPP and its MDA partners including BJP and UDP.
He asserted that people of Meghalaya don’t trust BJP as they are fearful about being stripped out of their protective ethnic and indigenous rights.
Gandhi also said that the ideology of the BJP and specifically the RSS is trying to attack and destroy the culture, tradition, and religion of the people.
“I’m here to tell you that we are standing with you in this fight. We are not going to allow the ideology of the BJP to harm your language, tradition, religion, culture and your history,” he said.
Gandhi also fired salvos at the Trinamool Congress and termed it as a B team of the BJP.
“Is TMC a silent partner of the BJP? Was the entry of TMC in Goa only a charade done to divide the votes against the Congress? Is TMC attempting something similar in Meghalaya? Is it intentionally going to cheat the people of Meghalaya also?” he asked.
Gandhi emphasised that the Congress was responsible for the creation of Meghalaya to fulfil the aspirations of the people of the State.
He asserted that the Congress party has always respected the uniqueness and diversity of the people of the State and implemented the Sixth Schedule for the protection of cultural diversity and security of the people of Meghalaya.
