The Congress will soon announce its candidates for the by-elections to the three Assembly seats of Mawryngkneng, Mawphang and Rajabala.
Speaking to media persons here today, Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Dr. Mukul Sangma said that the names of the candidates will be decided in due course by the party high command.
“There is a process in the party and it will be followed,” Dr. Sangma said.
It may be mentioned that the Mawryngkneng Block Congress Committee had earlier proposed the name of Highlander Kharmalki as the candidate for the by-poll from Mawryngkneng constituency.
Kharmalki was the lone aspirant for Congress ticket from the constituency and his name has already been approved by the State Congress leadership.
Besides, he also has the backing of senior Congress MLA Charles Pyngrope who had represented the seat for many years in the last before the seat was taken over by Pyngrope’s son David Nongrum in 2013.
Kharmalki had contested the 2018 Assembly elections on PDF ticket and secured the second position. The seat was won by David Nongrum of Congress.
Congress is also likely to field former party MLA Kennedy C. Khyriem from Mawphlang constituency.
Khyriem had contested the 2018 polls but lost to independent candidate Syntar Klas Sunn by a margin of 718 votes.
Meanwhile, there are indications that Hasina Yasmin Mondol, widow of former Rajabala MLA, Dr. Azad Zaman may be declared as Congress candidate from the seat to replace her late husband.
