Shillong, Nov 24: The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (CoMSO) has urged the State government to invoke legal provisions to regulate and restrict influx of people reportedly fleeing West Bengal and Assam amid the ongoing revision of electoral rolls in those states.
In a statement CoMSO Chairman Roy Kupar Synrem said enforcement measures are necessary to prevent disturbances to public order. He said unregulated movement of individuals entering Meghalaya from West Bengal and Assam will put at risk the security, public order, and legal rights of the citizens of Meghalaya.
“The government of Meghalaya is legally empowered to regulate entry, conduct verification and enforce measures necessary to maintain public order. Any delay or inaction could amount to administrative failure,” he said.
CoMSO has demanded mandatory registration, identity verification, and documentation for all persons entering the State, deployment of police and district administration personnel at all major entry points.
It demanded activation of emergency coordination mechanisms, involving DCs, SPs and border management units, besides a formal government notification detailing the legal basis and administrative steps being taken.
“This is a matter of public safety and legal responsibility. The people of Meghalaya expect the State Government to exercise its lawful authority without delay, without ambiguity, and with full seriousness. The situation at present calls for swift, firm and legal actions within the full framework of the law,” Synrem said.
