Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has continued to remain non-committal on the demand for Tura to be the winter capital of Meghalaya.
Sangma today said that he would meet members of ACHIK, the pressure group spearheading an ongoing hunger strike in Tura, when he next visits the town. But as far as the demand goes, Sangma said that the government has kept all areas in mind while working towards development.
“In Tura we have started the mini-Secretariat,” he said. “It is a big step and we will explain the impact of the mini-Secretariat to them (ACHIK) besides the large investment and administrative reforms that will take place. There will also be improvement in the delivery of schemes and presence of administration.”
The CM also pointed out that the work for a Governor’s House in Tura is nearing completion and will be made functional within this financial year.
“The ultimate goal is always to ensure that development reaches the people and the administration gets closer to people,” he reiterated.
As far as the demand for retrospective implementation of the roster system (another ACHIK demand) is concerned, Sangma said that the government took the decision incorporated in an office memorandum after consultations with all stakeholders and the decision was communicated to every group, including ACHIK.
“For us to take it back and look into it will be difficult,” he said.
