Shillong, May 7: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday took a dig at the Voice of the people Party (VPP) for not attending yesterday’s all-party meet to discuss the report of the expert committee on the State Reservation Policy.
The report had been tabled in the Assembly during the recent budget session.
According to the CM, the all-party meeting convened by the government after Sangma had promised the Assembly that such a meeting would take place to get the views of all political parties.
The VPP had pushed strongly for a review of the policy but the expert committee did not propose any major alterations to the 54-year quota system.
“When we are looking at an issue, we must go all out in what we believe in,” Sangma said. “This meeting was very important because in a constitutional parliamentary democracy these are the platforms where you take up issues.”
He added that one does not go to the streets for every single issue, especially when opportunities are being provided in a democratic and constitutional manner.
“It is sad that though they (the VPP) demanded it (the meeting, ultimately they did not come,” the Chief Minister said.
In a letter to the government, the party had explained that the timing was not conducive for the said meeting.
