Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today strongly condemned the recent disruption caused by a pressure group at NEIGRIHMS, stating that interfering with hospital operations is “unacceptable under any circumstances.”
The incident last week saw the Hynñiewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) barge into the administrative building and force the Director and other staff out during work hours. This followed the Director’s failure to meet a deadline imposed by the HYC for its demands regarding recruitment to the teaching hospital. The Director subsequently said that the action created fear among staff and patients.
Expressing his dismay, Sangma drew a comparison, stating, “Even during times of war, there is an unwritten code that armed forces never attack hospitals. I’m very disappointed to see that the operations of a hospital were interfered with. Whatever the reasons may be, at the end of the day, it is the people and patients who suffer.”
The CM acknowledged that grievances may exist and reiterated the government’s willingness to engage in dialogue. However, he maintained that disrupting essential healthcare services is not an acceptable form of protest.
Sangma confirmed that the police have taken cognizance of the matter, a case has been registered and investigations are underway. “The police are taking steps as per law and based on available evidence. Necessary action will be taken,” he assured.
