In a tragic, yet bizarre, incident, a Class 9 student died after a speaker he was using to play music on exploded.
The boy was identified as Jringjang M Sangma. He was a student of Bethal Academy in Bolsalgre, South Garo Hills. The speaker exploded as it was being charged, reports said. The force of the blast was enough to kill the boy on the spot and leave the room in tatters.
According to police, Sangma had been given the speaker on Thursday but only opened it today when his mother went to drop her other son to his hostel. One conflicting report suggests that the device was given to the boy by his friend, another that it was given by an unknown man through a woman who worked at the boy’s residence as a maid.
The body was taken for an autopsy and police are still investigating the case. It is rare but not unheard of for electric devices to explode or catch fire when being charged. Equipment manufacturers tend to blame duplicate chargers for these incidents.
