Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai said that the Central government is only working as a facilitator in settlement of the inter-state boundary dispute between Meghalaya and Assam.
Informing this in the Rajya Sabha today Rai said, “The inter-state boundary issues should be resolved only with the cooperation of individual state governments concerned and the Central government will act only as a facilitator for amicable settlement of boundary issues in the spirit of mutual cooperation.”
Stating that Assam and Meghalaya have agreed for permanent settlement of inter-state boundary disputes at six locations, the Union minister said, “As a result of these discussions, the chief ministers of Assam and Meghalaya have agreed for permanent settlement of the inter-state boundary in respect of six areas of difference out of total twelve areas of difference between the states of Assam and Meghalaya.”
Rai said that discussions have been going on at various levels between the states of Assam and Meghalaya to arrive at an amicable solution to the border issue at the remaining flash points along the border.
The two states will sign an agreement to resolve the dispute in six border areas in New Delhi on March 27 in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
The agreement will be for settlement of the boundary dispute in six of the twelve disputed areas.
These six areas are Hahim, Gizang, Tarabari, Baklapara, Khanapara-Pilingkata and Ratacherra.
The remaining six areas where the dispute is more complicated will be taken later in the second phase.
