Shillong, May 30: Census and election duties assigned to teachers are not only civic tasks but fundamental duties under the Right to Education Act, Meghalaya Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan School Association president Aristotle Rymbai said.
He said that while census duties occur only once every ten years, election responsibilities arise occasionally. He stated, “We are not opposed to such duties but as responsible citizens, we have to do our part.”
Rymbai said teachers, being trained to shape the future of the state, are uniquely equipped to carry out these responsibilities effectively.
Recognising the importance of these tasks, Rymbai urged the state government to ensure that teachers are not overly burdened, especially considering the ongoing MTET examination.
He said that collaboration between teachers and the government is crucial to manage these responsibilities well, with authorities mindful of teachers’ workloads. Each teacher is assigned a specific number of households to manage, with a timeframe to complete their duties, he said.
The president said honorarium payments are provided to teachers for their involvement in these civic tasks.
