The ongoing case in the Meghalaya High Court filed by deceased police officer Amit Sinha against the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) may no longer continue.

The matter came up in the High Court bench of Justice Wanlura Diengdoh today in which Sinha’s lawyer S Thapa informed that his client died recently in a road accident in Gurgaon.

However, since the death certificate or confirmation of such death could not be brought on record before the court today, for which some time is prayed for by Thapa, the High Court adjourned the matter to two weeks.

Sinha, sub-inspector of Ri-Bhoi district police, died in a road accident in Gurgaon on February 17. He and his friend Digvijay Singh had gone to eat food in sector 58 Gurgaon, and while returning in their vehicle driven by Singh, an unknown vehicle hit them from behind, causing the accident. Singh sustained multiple injuries and was admitted to a nearby hospital.

It may be mentioned that Sinha had in 2021 moved the Meghalaya High Court challenging the order issued by the MHRC for a police inquiry into the alleged snatching of a mobile phone of a resident of Umroi area.

The MHRC had ordered the inquiry based on a complaint by social worker Agnes Kharshiing.

According to the complaint, Kronding Nongbsap, headman of Syllei U Lar, Umroi was taking video on his mobile phone of overloaded trucks passing through the dilapidated Dwar Ksuid bridge on December 30, 2020.

The complaint stated that Sinha who was the in-charge of Khapmara police outpost near Umroi arrived at the spot and snatched the mobile phone from Nongbsap.

Following the complaint by Kharshiing, the MHRC directed the Police Department to conduct an inquiry by an officer of the rank of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) and to submit a report within 30 days.

However, Sinha filed a writ petition before the Meghalaya High Court challenging the inquiry ordered by the MHRC.
