A cancer awareness and screening camp was organised for residents of Lumshnong and Brichyrnot recently by the corporate social responsibility initiative of the Star Cement.
The camp held at Lumshnong Community Hall, East Jaiñtia Hills District was attended by about 221 villagers who were screened by doctors of the North East Cancer Hospital and Research Institute (NECHRI), Assam.
NECHRI Managing Director Dr M.N Baruah informed that 20 out of 100 are cancer patients from Meghalaya who are treated at the hospital. He said most of the cancer cases are directly attributed to tobacco consumption.
Dr Rahul Das, Dr Anukampa Baruah of NECHRI and Dr N.Phyllei of Lumshnong PHC were attending doctors at the camp.
Medical Officer of the company Dr Sanjib Deka, Senior General Manager Air Marshal (Retd) R.V. Ramkishore was also present at the camp.
