Acting on a specific tip-off, troops of the 181st Battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF) Meghalaya deployed in the Gasuapara area seized a cache of medicines worth Rs 11.8 lakh hidden in the jungle close to the international border with Bangladesh.
The consignment was hidden there by suspected smugglers who intended on transporting the medicines over the border under the cover of darkness. The seizure was made on yesterday.
The impounded medicines were handed over to the Customs office in Dalu. Indian pharmaceutical products have a worldwide reputation and their lower prices as compared to that of Bangladesh medicines raise the demand in the neighbouring country and prompt such illicit acts of smuggling, the BSF said in a press release today.
