An eight-storey building at Mawkynroh, near the Mawlai Bypass was detected at risk of collapse by the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Shillong.
According to the NIT, the building is under “very high risk” and requires immediate attention.
It also noted that nearby areas are susceptible to landslides, urging residents and landowners to take precautionary measures.
The building came under the scrutiny of the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) in the month of May following a landslide caused by Cyclone Remal. Parents and teachers of a school, Grace Academy had also voiced their concern over the way the building was allowed to be constructed.
It may be noted that the cyclone had caused significant damage to houses, infrastructure, and public facilities across the State due to landslide.
The NIT report also highlighted that the Mawlai Bypass road is at risk of landslides, lacking adequate protective measures to prevent potential earth movements.
