Personnel from the Border Security Force (BSF) Meghalaya and state police rescued 67 cattle from the international border in two separate incidents in East Khasi Hills and West Jaiñtia Hills.
The smugglers intended to transport the cattle illegally into Bangladesh, a BSF press release said today.
Acting on specific information, troops of the BSF’s 193rd Battalion carried out a coordinated operation with Meghalaya police wherein they seized 37 cattle that were concealed in jungle near the border village of Kamarphil in East Khasi Hills. The seized cattle were subsequently handed over to the Dangar police station for further action.
In another operation, troops of the 4th and 193rd Battalions also seized 30 cattle near the international border, while being smuggled to Bangladesh.
