The Border Security Force (BSF) is celebrating its 58th Raising Day and this was also celebrated by the Meghalaya unit.
The BSF was created on December 1, 1965 in the aftermath of that year’s Indo-Paksitan War when the need for a specialized and specific force to guard the borders was felt.
The force guards 2,725km on the western frontier and 4,096km on the eastern frontier of India. In addition, it serves the nation on the Line of Control, in counter insurgency, anti-Naxal operations, etc.
Initiated with 25 battalions, the BSF now has 193. The force has grown not only in volumes but also in its capabilities as it now has one air wing, water wing and artillery.
On this auspicious occasion, Inderjit Singh Rana, Inspector General BSF Meghalaya, stated that the BSF Meghalaya Frontier is strongly dominating the 444km stretch of international border with Bangladesh and is undertaking various confidence-building measures and public outreach programmes to cement the relationship with border population of Meghalaya.
During the year, BSF Meghalaya seized smuggled goods worth more than Rs 25 crore, including cattle, drugs and narcotics, gold and various other items. In addition to this, 123 people were apprehended while crossing the border illegally, namely 61 Indians, 32 Bangladeshis and 30 Rohingya refugees.
