The motorcycle expedition team of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) reached Shillong and were given a warm welcome today.
The BRO is celebrating the 75th year of India’s Independence as part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav through the expedition touching all corners of the country to spread awareness on road safety as well as its contribution towards nation building.
“Expedition is being conducted in seven legs. State of Meghalaya is being covered in Leg 4 which commenced at Doomdooma in Arunachal Pradesh on November 16, 2021 and will end at Kolkata on November 26, 2021,” the BRO said.
The expedition was flagged off by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh from National War Memorial, Delhi on October 14, which is the first of its kind covering 20,000 kms over 75 days with more than 75 riders including officers and other ranks from BRO.
The expedition will culminate at New Delhi on December 27.
In Shillong, an outreach programme was organised by the HQ Research & Development Establishment wherein the team visited Saint Claret Higher Secondary School, Umkdait in Nongmensong.
Speaking on the occasion, Sunil Kumar Choubey, SE (Civil), Officiating Chief Engineer HQ R & D Estt (BRO) highlighted the yeoman service being done by BRO in connecting places, connecting people in the country in general and Meghalaya in particular. He also urged the youth of the State to contribute towards nation building.
Principal of the school, Fr. Siby Kuriakose and students were also present at the programme.
It may be mentioned that BRO till date constructed around 50000 kms of roads over 450 pmt bridges of length 44000 meters and 19 airfields in strategic locations, besides construction of prestigious Atal Tunnel (Rohtang Tunnel).
Most of these infrastructure developments have been done on the Chinese and Pakistani borders in the treacherous hills of Himalayas. Construction and development of the road on Umling-la Pass in Ladakh Region of India, is included in the Guinness Book of World record.
The BRO has imprints in Meghalaya as the Research & Development Estt, involved in the research and development of new materials and technology to be incorporated in fast pace construction of roads, bridges, tunnels and airfields is headquartered in Shillong.
