Shillong, Apr 25: BJP Meghalaya unit led by its Mahila Morcha staged a sit-in protest at Khyndailad here today, demanding 33 per cent reservation for women in elected bodies.
BJP Meghalaya Mahila Morcha president Arena Hynniewta, East Khasi Hills district president Priambadah Blah and other members gave a call for greater representation in political and legislative processes across the state.
Hynniewta said that implementing this reservation would not only enhance decision-making but also promote women’s empowerment throughout the region. She expressed confidence that the Narendra Modi-led central government would be successful in gifting the 33 per cent reservation to women of India.
Hynniewta criticised the Congress party, alleging that it has obstructed the passage of the equality bill in parliament. She pointed out that, despite women’s significant contributions to society, their presence in formal political structures remains limited.
The Mahila Morcha leaders called on policymakers to take swift action to actualize the 33 per cent reservation, stating it has become an urgent necessity.
Another rally was also organised by BJP women members near Polo, which saw state BJP secretaries Daniela Nonglait, Susuki Pariat and Angie Sangma as participants.
