Tura MDC and state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) vice-president Bernard N Marak met villagers of Gambegre block to create awareness of central government schemes and also to review such schemes’ implementation.
The decision to visit Gambegre is significant as the area will elect a new MLA after the incumbent, Saleng Sangma of the Congress Party, won the recent Lok Sabha election for Tura (Garo Hills). Marak is reportedly keen on being the BJP candidate for the by-election.
Marak said that the people of Gambegre have complained about incomplete work in projects under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), high electricity bills, unpaid wages under MGNREGS and problems with the implementation of PMAY, PM-KISAN, PMGSY, etc.
The BJP functionary said that the incomplete JJM projects were one of the most-discussed subjects because some contractors erected completion signboards without an actual water supply.
He said that there was one family that came with a complaint about receiving an electricity bill without an electricity connection.
“Others complained of MGNREGS wages not being credited into their accounts even after [it is showing as paid] online,” he said.
He said that he has taken the initiative to visit the blocks and every project taken up under the Centre to ensure that there is no compromise on the quality of work.
Marak also said that he supervised the schools sanctioned for repair and new construction under Gambegre block so that education in rural villages gets an uplift and better facilities.
Health and wellness centres including NRHM will also be monitored for better service and upgradation of facilities for the poor. He further stated that the PMGSY is one of the major schemes that has connected villages in the state but sub-standard work is visible in some areas and maintenance of the roads has to be taken care of.
