The Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Sohra has passed an order banning the dumping of waste in an area known as Tiew-u-Jir-Bah, which is a disputed patch of land between Mawkisyiem and Nongrim villages.
The order, issued on April 14 but shared with the media today, said that the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department has constructed a dispensary on a plot of land given to it by the Dorbar Shnong of Nongrim. Within the vicinity of Tiew-u-Jir-Bah there lies the source of drinking water that supplies various government offices and nearby villages.
The Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Mark A Challam, also stated there is an apprehension that the dumping of waste will likely contaminate the water source and, therefore, there is a need for an order under Section 163 of the BNSS to prohibit the dumping of waste, spoil, domestic or medical discharge, etc by the hill slopes and all along the hill slopes surrounding the water source at Tiew-u-Jir-Bah to ensure the protection of drinking water in the area.
