Shillong, Apr 27:Districts across Meghalaya have issued weather advisories warning of thunderstorms, lightning, very heavy rainfall and gusty winds from April 27 to May 1, 2026, and urged the public to take precautions against flash floods and electrocution.
In South West Garo Hills, an intense thunderstorm struck on Sunday night, resulting in damage to several villages and affecting nearly 100 people. Thankfully, no casualties or injuries were reported.
According to officials from the Deputy Commissioner’s office, the worst-hit areas were Rerapara, Zikzak and Purakhasia blocks.
Rerapara was the most affected, with 36 people affected across five villages. The storm damaged several homes in the area, leaving four houses partially damaged and one completely destroyed.
Zikzak block reported 28 affected persons, with five houses suffering partial damage in three villages. In Purakhasia, 12 people were affected and two houses were partially damaged in two villages.
Twelve houses were damaged in total – 11 partially and one fully – spread over 10 villages in the district.
Power lines were also damaged but electricity supply was restored shortly after the incident.
Meanwhile, more severe weather is predicted for the state in the coming days and the government has issued warnings to the public.
The advisories are based on the weather forecast from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
In East Khasi Hills specifically, for April 28, 29 and 30 the forecast is “thunderstorm/lightning with very heavy rainfall and gusty wind speed of 40-50 kmph.” On May 1, “thunderstorm/lightning and heavy rainfall with 40-50 kmph gusty wind” is likely, the advisory said.
The administration has asked the public not to drive through flooded areas and to stay away from electric poles or power lines to avoid electrocution. “Do not venture into streams, rivers and waterfalls,” it said.
For emergency assistance, the public has been asked to dial 112.
“The public is advised to remain alert and take necessary precautions to ensure safety during this period,” the advisory added.
