Khliehriat, Apr 30: In a significant breakthrough in the ongoing battle against ATM theft, Meghalaya police made another arrest with the apprehension of Irsad alias Rumi, a 32-year-old man from Mewat, Haryana.
East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police, Pankaj Kumar Rasgania, said that Irsad was arrested from Tauri following a coordinated operation between Meghalaya police and local law enforcement agencies in Haryana.
Irsad is part of a criminal gang, which is actively involved in theft ATM machine of the HDFC at Wapung using a gas cutter and fled with Rs 9, 57,900 on April 14.
The investigation has revealed a connection between Irsad and previous arrests linked to an ATM theft case at the Meghalaya Cooperative Apex Bank in Bhoirymbong, Ri Bhoi district where Rs 7.77 lakh in cash was stolen.
In recent months, Meghalaya Police have significantly intensified their efforts to crack down ATM theft, responding to a series of incidents across the state. Notably, a spike in criminal activity was reported in districts such as East Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi, where several ATMs were targeted in meticulously planned robberies.
