The decks are cleared for Saleng Sangma to take up his new role as MP for Tura in New Delhi after his resignation as Gambegre MLA was accepted by the Speaker of the Meghalaya Assembly, Thomas A Sangma, today.
Saleng had resigned yesterday following his win in the Lok Sabha election. The Gambegre seat will thus have to be filled through a by-election.
“The Speaker has accepted his (Saleng’s) resignation,” Assembly’s Commissioner and Secretary Andrew Simons informed today.
In a huge upset, Saleng defeated the incumbent MP, Agatha K Sangma, by a massive margin of more than 1.5 lakh votes on a Congress Party ticket.
