West Garo Hills police arrested an Assistant Branch Post Master of Tumni Post Office, South Salamara, Assam and his aide for using new ATM cards of bank customers.
Police said his aide, identified as Lotiful Islam was first arrested today after credible information was received from the general public that he was using ATM machine again and again with different ATM cards.
A team from Phulbari police station apprehended Islam and recovered 44 HDFC Bank ATM cards, one IPPB ATM card, SBI ATM card, 44 opened HDFC ATM envelopes, a SBI and IPPB pass books, scooty bearing registration number AS-18H-7723, two mobile phones and cash Rs 10, 290 were seized from his possession.
Police said after an enquiry, it was learnt that Islam worked for Ashraful Islam, the Assistant Branch Post Master in Assam, who also appeared at the police station.
“Ashraful stated that the work of Post Master is being done by him and he further deputed his work to Islam illegally,” police said, adding, it is suspected that they open the ATM card envelopes of the customers illegally without any authority and withdraw money using the PIN.
A case has been registered and investigation is on.
