The Assam Cabinet today approved the creation of the Khasi-Jaintia Development Council aimed at addressing the specific needs and concerns of the community living there.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the state cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The council of ministers gave ex-post facto approval for the creation of Khasi-Jaintia Development Council, Sarma said.
The move is expected to enhance community representation and foster development. Khasi-Jaintia makes up 1.7 lakh of the total population in the Barak Valley and live in 375 villages.
The demand for creation of a development council in Assam was made by the Khasi-Jaiñtia people of Barak Valley in Assam since 2011.
