Social activist, Angela Rangad and Kyrsoibor Pyrtuh today officially announced their decision to contest the 2023 Assembly elections.
Rangad will run in the elections from the South Shillong constituency, a stronghold of BJP MLA Sanbor Shullai, while Pyrtuh from North Shillong constituency, represented by KHNAM member Adelbert Nongrum.
The pair had on June 17 formed KAM Meghalaya, a citizens’ platform, which proposes the need to identify shared values that are committed to changes that are democratic, pro-people and inclusive.
They will contest the elections as independent candidates as registration process of KAM with Election Commission of India will take more time.
Announcing their decision at a press conference held at Laban, Rangad said KAM, which means ‘work’, is a platform for workers that will respect those who work and labour.
“We are taking up issues and our struggles to this platform because we have to admit that as a state, we are in a crisis,” she said.
Rangad further said that true change for Meghalaya will not come through leaders but through the “coming together of people who want to discover the values of democratic citizenship in their everyday life and to reclaim the rights of the people, fight corruption, criminality and communalism.”
She further informed that KAM Meghalaya will hold a campaign to spread the idea of their platform that will be based on principles, values and issues.
