The special session of the Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) ended today with the passage of the Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District (Constitution of District Council) (Amendment) Bill, 2024.
The bill which was tabled in the House yesterday by JHADC Chief Executive Member Thombor Shiwat was passed by the House despite strong demand by various MDCs for referring the bill to the select committee.
The MDCs who included Andrew Shullai, Arbor Hima Darnei, Richard Lyngdoh, Brightstar Chyrmang, Lamris Lyngdoh, Finelyness Bareh, J Treilang Suchiang, Robinus Syngkon, Aiborlang Shadap, Lakhon Biam, Saron Pasweth and Dawan Lyngdoh expressed their dissatisfaction with the report of the delimitation committee and said that the JHADC should respect the sentiments expressed by people who are against shifting of villages to other constituencies.
However, Chief Executive Member Thombor Shiwat said that the report of the delimitation committee has been received by the Executive Committee and all the recommendations in the report were balanced and with proper justification.
Shiwat also informed that the total number of votes in all 29 constituencies of JHADC is over 3,05,200.
It may be noted that the delimitation committee has proposed the abolition of the Jowai Central Constituency and creation of Nangbah-Mihmyntdu Constituency.
The committee also reorganised most constituencies under the JHADC.
During the hearings held by the delimitation committee last month in Jowai, Khliehriat and Amlarem, the majority of people were opposed to the draft proposals. They also threatened to boycott the upcoming JHADC elections if their demand for status quo was not accepted.
