Shillong, Nov 27: Akashvani Shillong today marked a vibrant cultural milestone with the celebration of the 67th Sangeet Sammelan in Shillong.
Celebrated folk and western musicians from across Meghalaya gathered for a musical evening.
Organised at the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), the programme highlighted Akashvani’s commitment to preserving and promoting the country’s rich musical traditions.
The evening featured soulful performances showcasing regional folk music. While folk artist who is also a Padma Shri awardee, Silbi Passah, Khorsha Kordor Marbaniang and Louvre Venus R. Marak enthralled the audience with soothing vocals, traditional instruments, Gwyneth A. Mawlong, Na Rympei and Colours bands presented their signature styles that drew the crowd.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Lapynshai Syiem, Head of the Department of Cultural Studies and Creative Arts, NEHU said the event is an occasion to honour local talent and artists and Akashvani Shillong itself has been a pioneer in nurturing and promoting local talent.
Terming Akashvani as a much revered platform for independent artists, she added, “Through its daily broadcast, it became the source of music variations. Today Akashvani Shillong is regarded as a national stage with its nationwide presence. It has lent a voice to people who do not have access to mainstream media to express their creativity. Therefore, it has the capacity to break down barriers of isolation. Akashvani empowers the community. It has been able to establish itself as a melodious tradition that brought about a swift transition to our society.”
Cluster Head & Regional Channel Manager, Akashvani Shillong, Hamarlin Diengdoh said the event is a proud testament to Akashvani’s commitment to nurture India’s rich and diverse musical heritage. For over seven decades, this prestigious annual event has brought together the finest exponents of Hindustani and Carnatic Classical music, folk traditions, and in recent years, contemporary and western genres, celebrating the timeless spirit of Indian music, he said.
The Sangeet Sammelan is presented by Prasar Bharati, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture. This year the event is being organised across 24 centres nationwide. It features two concerts at each venue – one dedicated to Indian Classical Music and the other to Light/Folk Music. Shillong and Panaji exclusively hosted western classical presentations, reflecting India’s regional musical diversity.
